Karen Karnes (1925-2016) was a ceramics artist best known for her salt glazed, earth-toned stoneware. Born in New York City, she attended art school as a child and in 1967 began experimenting with salt-firing at a workshop at the Penland School of Crafts. As she progressed, her contemporary work with vessels became the core of her designs and she continued to create functional vessels including casseroles, teapots, cups, and bowls.
